Words have meaning. Words have power. Words educate. Words hurt. Words bring joy.
In PR, words are everything! We wouldn’t get anywhere toward our Awareness, Authority, Engagement, and Activation goals if we sat in Zoom silence staring at each other all day. (Although staring contests are admittedly the best. Yes, I have young kids.)
For the last two years, I’ve declared a “Word of the Year.”
The objective of the “Word of the Year” is to help anchor us and empower our team to continue to do amazing work for our partners.
In 2022, it was Proactivity.
In 2023, it was Unstoppable.
In 2024, the Word of the Year is…Intentional.
Intentionality is all about doing things with purpose. I break this down as:
- Having a reason why. Don’t do something just to do. Do the things that matter and know why they matter.
- Being able to articulate the why clearly. It’s easy to get in our own heads. That’s why it’s important to communicate thinking so we’re on the same page with each other and our partners. And to stay open to input when we do.
- Asking for what we need to be successful. We can do some great things on our own, but our best work is done in tandem with our team and our partners. If there’s an obstacle that needs to be overcome, idea that needs clarification, or anecdote or customer that would strengthen our efforts, we are vocal about it.
- Reflecting and adjusting after execution. This seems obvious, but it’s so easy to get caught up in the next thing before you’ve fully learned from the last one.
So, that’s the year ahead. Bringing it all together, it’s about Intentional, Proactive Execution.
Enjoy the holiday season and have a great start to 2024!
